Montana State University Billings, also known simply as MSU Billings, is a state university located in Billings, which is the largest city in the U.S. state of Montana, having a population estimated at a number of more than 100 000 inhabitants, during the 2009 census, being the 60th fastest growing city out of the 259 US cities, of which Billings occupies the 244th place. Billings is also the county seat of Yellowstone County and the principal city of the Billings Metropolitan Area, the largest metropolitan area in Montana, being the largest city between Denver and Calgary and between Sioux Falls and Spokane, as well.
MSU Billings was officially established in 1927, when it first started as Eastern Montana Normal School. Later, the university was renamed as Eastern Montana College, which turned into the institution's current name, when the Montana State University System reorganized in 1994. Currently, the university has an enrollment of more than 5000 students and offers associate, bachelor, master degrees and certificates, in various fields of study.
The athletic teams at Montana State University Billings are known as the Yellowjackets, who compete in the NCAA's Great Northwest Athletic Conference and in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, in various sports, for both men and women, including in volleyball, tennis, cheerleading, cross country, golf and soccer. Their distinctive colors are blue and gold.
